How To Use Social Media To Promote Your Music
Are you trying to figure out how to get your music heard using social media? If you are trying to learn how to expose your music, you have to get people to listen to it indirectly. Throwing music in people’s faces will simply not work. Take a minute and ask yourself, “What is the purpose of social media?” Are people using social media to listen to your music? Or are they there for other reasons? After asking yourself these questions, you should realize people are not on social media to listen to your music. There are other platforms for that (Youtube, Spotify, Pandora). But don’t worry, there are ways to market your music on social media.
Approaching Social Media
If we could just post our music to social media and people would just listen things would be easy for us. But that is not the case. You must first recognize WHY people are on social media. I’ll tell you this right now: They are only there for their own benefit. What do I mean by that? People are logged on to social media to engage with content they are interested in. That means they CHOOSE to watch what they watch, like what they like, share what they share, etc. So if you’re trying to figure out how to get your music heard, you have to give people a reason to CHOOSE to listen to your music. But how do you do this?
Building Relationships On Social Media
People are not going to choose to listen to your music if they don’t know who you are. That’s where relationship building comes into play. You need to be building relationships with your potential fans/friends on a one by one basis. Asking them to check out your new song right away will be something that’s out of the ordinary for them because they don’t know you. That is not how to get your music heard. Get to know the person you are speaking to. You need to be speaking to people as you would if you were speaking face to face. I know that sounds simple, but a lot of artists are out here communicating with people ineffectively. Then they wonder why they are not gaining new fans, and no one is listening to their music.
Create Engaging Content
Another way that is key to getting your music heard is creating content that people can engage with organically. Your goal should be to put out content where people can get to know who you are. The key is to be yourself and let your personality show. Humor tends to work really well on social media. People like a good laugh, so feel free to experiment cracking a few jokes on your updates. Also, take advantage of putting out videos. Your audience will get a lot more out of you when they see your face on video then they would from a text update. I recommend investing in a nice DSLR camera. Quality is also key on how to expose your music.
Don’t Fake It
When creating content for your audience to engage with you want to make sure you are being yourself at all times. Don’t “fake” things and pretend to be something you’re not to try and get attention. People will pick up on this and you will be off of their radar before you know it. It’s okay to try new things. You need to get comfortable being uncomfortable, especially on social media where you are letting everyone in on what you do. Don’t be afraid to put out a type of content you’ve never tried before. It’s going to take some testing in the beginning to figure out which type of content works best for you. Just be real about it and always be yourself.

The whole point of creating engaging content is to get people to know you as a person. Show people you are someone that everyone wants to be around. Use your content as ways to market your music. If people engage with your content THEN they will more likely listen to your music. Shoving it in their faces is not how to expose your music. And make sure you stay connected with your new fans. Take the time to message them personally to get to know them better. If you are trying to figure out how to get your music heard you need to put the work in for new listeners. Dropping your links on the social media news feed is like praying to win the lottery.
